Abstract

The material utilization coefficient for a leaf spring (MUCS) that is used in technical computing is considered. The simplest single-leaf spring and double-leaf spring are investigated. The explicit expressions for the MUCS are found. The MUCS is established primarily to be the measure of the full strength of the leaf spring. The problems of MUCS maximization and leaf spring mass minimization are studied. It turns out that the relations of these problems are not simple. The both problems can have no solutions; the first problem can have the solutions, while the second problem has no solutions; the first problem can have many solutions, one of them being the unique solution of the second problem. Thus, the MUCS determines the effectiveness of the material utilization in some cases but not in all cases.
